SCAC PRESIDENT'S TROPHY
DePauw retains President's Trophy

SUWANEE, Ga.
- DePauw University, after earning spring sports titles in men's and women's tennis as well as softball, pulled away for a 42.5 point victory over second-place Trinity University in the race for the 2007-08 SCAC President's Trophy. It is the third consecutive all-sports trophy win for the Tigers.

DePauw also posted second-place finishes in men's and women's track and field as well as women's golf at the 2008 SCAC Spring Sports Festival - the 46th and final occurrence of the league's venerable season-ending event.

All told, DePauw finished the 2007-08 season with seven team sports titles, including previous won championships in women's cross country, field hockey, men's swimming and diving and women's basketball.

Trinity, who trailed DePauw by 20 points entering the Festival, won two spring sports championships of its own - men's track and field and baseball - to go along with previous championships won in volleyball, men's and women's soccer, football (shared with Millsaps) and women's swimming and diving.

The three spring sport championships that didn't go to either DePauw or Trinity were women's track and field, which was won by Rhodes College, women's golf, which was won by Southwestern University, and men's golf, which was won by Oglethorpe University.

As for the rest of the President's Trophy standings, following DePauw and Trinity is Rhodes College, who moved up one place from the winter standings with 700 points. Centre College slipped to fourth with 675 points.

Southwestern University, who had finished sixth in the all-sports trophy race for nine consecutive seasons, posted its best finish since 1998 with 525 points and a fifth-place showing. Sewanee-University of the South improved one place from the winter rankings to finish in sixth with 485 points, and Colorado College slipped one place to seventh with 457.5 points. Hendrix College remained in eighth with 397.5 points.

Rounding out the standings - Millsaps College finished ninth with 360 points, while Oglethorpe University improved one place to finish at 10th with 337.5 points. Austin College finished in 11th place with 280 points.

Birmingham-Southern College, in its first year of a four-year provisional membership period, is not eligible for President's Trophy points.

The symbol of conference supremacy is the 300-pound railroad bell which was donated to the SCAC by the Norfolk and Western Railroad. This bell, the "President's Trophy", is a rotating award and goes to the school with the best overall sports record for the year.

The bell has been a part of the conference since its inception in 1962. In fact, the first conference logo (pictured below), when the league was known as the College Athletic Conference, has the image of the bell incorporated into it.

The President's Trophy is displayed for one year on the campus of the school with the combined men's and women's athletics program that accumulates the highest points total in the all-sports race.

Currently, with 11 member institutions eligible for President's Trophy points (Birmingham-Southern is a provisional member of the SCAC and will not be eligible for conference championships until the 2011-2012 season), a victory in any particular sport is worth 55 points, second place is worth 50 and so on.
