BENNING
AND TOURVILLE OF HENDRIX; ROWLAND OF TRINITY EARN TOP HONORS IN ALL-SCAC
WOMEN’S SOCCER VOTING
Junior
forward Stephanie Benning and coach Glen Tourville, both of Hendrix College,
were selected as SCAC Player and Coach-of-the-Year respectively, and Lindsay
Rowland of Trinity University was tabbed as the league’s
Freshman-of-the-Year in exclusive all-conference voting by the league’s head
coaches.
Benning, the first player in the history of the Hendrix soccer program to
garner player-of-the-year honors, had 14 goals and eight assists for the
Warriors during the 2001 season. Just a junior, Benning is already fifth
all-time on the SCAC career goals scored list with 53. Only Sara Morgan of
Centre College (1995-98) averaged more goals per game than Benning has in her
three years at Hendrix. In addition, she is tied for 10th all-time in the
conference in points scored with 118 (53 goals, 12 assists).
Coach Glen Tourville guided the Hendrix women to their first-ever winning
season as the Warriors finished 10-5-1 overall. More importantly, Hendrix
finished 5-3-1 and fourth-place in the SCAC – the highest finish ever for
the women’s team. When Tourville arrived in 1997, Hendrix had never won a
conference game and was 4-57-1 overall since joining the league in 1992. The
last three seasons, the Warriors are 26-21-1 overall and have seen their
conference victory total rise from two to three to this season’s 10 in that
stretch.
Rowland had a phenomenal rookie season for Trinity, scoring a league-leading
19 goals from her forward position. She finished second on the team and in the
league in scoring – averaging 2.33 points per game, trailing only teammate
Erica Adelstein. Her play was key in propelling the Tigers to a perfect 9-0-0
conference mark, 15-3-0 overall record, and a berth into the NCAA tournament.

SCAC Women's Soccer Co-Players-of-the-Week
(For games played
from Monday, Oct. 22nd through Sunday, Oct. 28th)
Two women's teams from the SCAC are heading into the NCAA
Tournament, and each had a player that contributed to the team's success - both
in the past week and the entire season.
Lindsay Rowland of Trinity University, a first-year forward
from Dallas, Texas,
scored three goals in the TU Tigers two victories over the past week,
concluding the team's regular season.
The Tigers clinched their ninth SCAC title with a 3-0 win over Southwestern, and
then finished the week with a 3-0 win over DII St. Edward's University on
Sunday. Rowland scored the first two goals against Southwestern - one of which
ended up as the game-winner, and then scored the final goal of the regular
season against St. Edward's.
Rowland amassed an incredible 19 goals in her first collegiate season, which
leads the team and the SCAC.
As Rowland's career is just beginning, Lizzie Ephraim of DePauw
University, a senior back from Glencoe, Ill., put the finishing touches
on her final regular season for the Tigers by scoring the first two goals of her
career in victories over Sewanee (3-0) and Centre (4-1).
Ephraim, who is a three-time All-SCAC performer, had a penalty-kick goal in both
SCAC victories. She will have a chance to add to her two-game scoring streak as
the DU Tigers were awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will host
John Carroll (Ohio) University on Wednesday.
Other impressive
performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore forward Elaine Odle of Rhodes had two goals, including the
game-winner, in Friday's 4-1 defeat of Millikin (Ill.). She finishes the 2001
season as the Lynx' third-leading scorer with five goals, one assist and 11
points. Odle also led the team in scoring last season (9 goals, 2 assists, 20
points) when she was named 2nd Team All-SCAC. Centre, Hendrix, Millsaps, Oglethorpe,
Rose-Hulman, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.

TRINITY TABBED
TO REPEAT AS
SCAC WOMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONS
The Trinity University Tigers have been selected to
defend its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) women’s soccer
title in exclusive preseason voting by the conference head coaches.
After DePauw University broke Trinity’s string of
seven-consecutive SCAC championships in 1999, the TU Tigers returned to the
top of the standings in 2000. Trinity ran the table with a conference mark of
9-0, and advanced all the way to the national semifinals before falling to the
College of New Jersey 1-0, in overtime to finish the season at 19-2-1.
Trinity received seven of the 10 first-place votes from
the coaches, while DePauw received the other three. DePauw dominated the
individual voting as six Tigers were tabbed preseason all-conference by the
coaches.
The SCAC continues to be one of the strongest Division
III soccer conferences in the nation as both Trinity (3rd) and DePauw (14th)
are ranked in the NSCAA/adidas women’s preseason top-25 poll. No other DIII
conference has more schools in the preseason rankings and just five other
leagues have as many.
